Budget Cuts for OFWs: Is Marcos Abandoning Filipino Migrants Amid Global Conflict?

Thu, Aug 20, 2026(11h ago)World

Many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are questioning the government's commitment to their welfare following reports of bureaucratic hurdles in accessing basic benefits. For workers like "Nheng," a domestic helper in Riyadh, the reality of support often falls short of the official narrative. Despite being an active contributor to the OWWA trust fund, she and many others continue to face rigid requirements that make receiving aid a struggle. This frustration is now being amplified by the administration’s latest fiscal decisions, which seem to contradict the government's rhetoric regarding the protection of its citizens abroad.

While President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. frequently touts his administration's successful repatriation efforts and aid distribution for those caught in Middle East conflicts, his proposed 2027 national budget tells a different story. The government has opted to slash the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) budget by over P654 million. Critics, including the advocacy group Migrante International, argue that these cuts treat OFWs as mere economic commodities rather than valued citizens. Despite the vital role of the 12-million-strong diaspora in propping up the Philippine economy through billions in annual remittances, these budget reductions suggest that the protection and reintegration of migrant workers may face significant systemic gaps in the coming years.
