FIFA Rejects Belgian Appeal Over Balogun Suspension Ruling

Tue, Jul 7, 2026(45d ago)World

FIFA has officially dismissed an appeal lodged by the Royal Belgian Football Association, labeling their challenge regarding Folarin Balogun’s World Cup suspension as inadmissible. The controversy centers on the US striker’s red card, which had been previously modified by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. Despite Belgium’s push to have the original disciplinary measures reinstated, global football's governing body has stood by its decision to allow the American forward to remain eligible for upcoming matches.

The situation escalated after former US President Donald Trump publicly criticized the decision, labeling the red card "horrible" and casting doubt on the integrity of Brazilian referee Raphael Claus. While Trump claimed he didn't explicitly demand the ruling be overturned, his remarks drew a sharp response from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The federation defended Claus as an "exemplary professional," flatly rejecting any suggestions of bias or misconduct. As political and sporting tensions simmer, FIFA remains firm, effectively closing the door on further formal protests regarding this specific incident.
