Typhoon Bavi Wreaks Havoc Across Asia as Thousands Flee

Sat, Jul 11, 2026(3h ago)World

As Typhoon Bavi carves a destructive path across East Asia, over 14,000 residents in Taiwan have been forced to evacuate their homes, while thousands more across Japan's southwestern islands remain without power. After leaving a trail of tragedy in the Philippines, where landslides triggered by the storm claimed at least 15 lives, Bavi moved toward Taiwan and Japan with fierce winds and torrential rainfall. Despite a slight reduction in the storm's intensity, authorities have issued urgent warnings regarding life-threatening waves and potential flooding, prompting mass power outages and widespread travel cancellations.

While government officials have taken aggressive precautionary measures—shuttering businesses and ordering evacuations—the response among local business owners has been mixed. Some residents in Keelung expressed frustration, feeling the economic impact of the shutdowns outweighed the actual weather conditions they experienced on the ground. Regardless, the threat remains imminent as the typhoon pivots toward eastern China. With officials in Zhejiang province already evacuating over 10,000 people ahead of the anticipated landfall, the region remains on high alert, bracing for further heavy rainfall that threatens to exacerbate an already dire season of extreme weather and flooding.
