Deadly Clashes Erupt in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir
Tensions have reached a breaking point in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where violent confrontations between security forces and members of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) have left nine people dead and at least a dozen others injured. The fatalities, which include seven civilians, one police officer, and one paramilitary soldier, occurred during clashes in the Poonch district on Tuesday. Despite the heavy death toll and warnings from officials, members of the activist group remain determined to continue their march toward the regional capital, Muzaffarabad, to demand significant economic and governance reforms.
The unrest stems from an ongoing standoff that began after the local government designated the JAAC a banned organization under anti-terrorism laws earlier this summer. While authorities have responded by sealing the group's offices, arresting hundreds of supporters, and implementing road blockades, protesters argue that their movement is focused on legitimate political rights, such as abolishing reserved legislative seats they claim are used to manipulate local parliament. With shops and public transport at a standstill across the region, the situation remains volatile as both sides refuse to back down ahead of the upcoming regional elections.
