Tragedy in Chongqing: Landslide Claims 8 Lives with Dozens Still Missing
A massive landslide struck Pengshui County in southwestern China on Friday morning, resulting in at least eight confirmed deaths and leaving 34 others unaccounted for. State media reported that the disaster occurred around 9:10 am, sending a deluge of rocks and debris crashing into a busy commercial and residential area at the base of a mountain. Rescue operations have been mobilized on a massive scale, with over 800 personnel working at the site to pull survivors from the wreckage. While 18 trapped individuals were successfully recovered, authorities confirmed that eight of them could not be saved.
The region's rugged and unstable landscape has complicated the ongoing recovery efforts, with officials warning that loose rocks continue to pose a threat along the cliffside. President Xi Jinping has directed government agencies to prioritize the search for the missing and conduct thorough inspections to identify geological risks in the area to prevent future catastrophes. To support the recovery efforts and assist those impacted by the disaster, the Chinese government has pledged 50 million yuan in relief funding. This event marks the second major landslide in the country in less than a month, following a deadly incident in Gansu province that claimed 21 lives just days earlier.
