Philippines Offers College Financial Aid for OFW Families

Mon, Aug 3, 2026(1h ago)World

The Philippine government, through the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), is inviting the children and siblings of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to apply for two major college scholarship programs. These initiatives are designed to ease the financial burden of tertiary education for families of migrant workers. The OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (ODSP) provides an annual grant of up to Php20,000, while the Education for Development Scholarship Programme (EDSP) offers a more substantial annual benefit of Php60,000. To qualify for the EDSP, Grade 12 graduates must successfully pass a rigorous examination administered by the Department of Science and Technology.

To remain eligible, applicants must be unmarried, and their OFW relative must maintain an active OWWA membership at the time of application. Officials have emphasized that once a student is accepted into the program, they can continue receiving support until they graduate, even if their family member eventually ceases working abroad. With limited slots available each year, families are encouraged to monitor the official OWWA website for application windows and ensure all required documentation is prepared in advance. This program has already helped numerous students across the country pursue professional careers in fields like medicine and engineering, providing a vital bridge to educational success.
