Five Rescued from Flooded Laos Cave After Week-Long Ordeal
A search and rescue mission in central Laos has brought a glimmer of hope after specialist divers located five of the seven individuals who had been missing in a flooded cave for an entire week. The group, who had entered the Xaysomboun province cave system on May 20 in search of gold, became trapped when torrential rains triggered flash flooding that blocked their exit. Footage from the scene showed the men huddled together, covered in mud but alert, as rescuers provided an initial assessment of their condition.
While the discovery of the survivors is a major breakthrough, experts caution that the mission is far from over. The men remain in a terminal chamber about 300 meters from the cave entrance, and the path to safety involves navigating dangerous, narrow passages filled with floodwaters and potential collapse hazards. Divers, including veterans of the famous 2018 Thai cave rescue, are now focused on delivering food and medical supplies to the group while preparing for a complex extraction. Meanwhile, search efforts continue for the two remaining individuals who have yet to be located.
