GCC Rail Network Agreement Set for November Signing in Manama
On November 8, representatives from all six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations will gather in Manama, Bahrain, to formalize a landmark agreement for the regionâs ambitious railway project. Under the current Bahraini presidency of the GCC, transport and communications ministers, alongside Secretary General Jassim Albudaiwi, will finalize the framework for this massive infrastructure undertaking. This deal is designed to solidify the operational timeline and clarify the specific responsibilities of each member state, ensuring a collaborative effort to streamline the project's development while empowering the GCC Railways Authority to proactively address any logistical hurdles.
Spanning over 2,100 kilometers, the network is poised to revolutionize regional connectivity, fostering stronger economic ties and sustainable trade growth. With half of the project already complete according to recent PwC reports, the GCC remains firmly on track for full operation by 2030. Beyond its role in boosting local trade and social integration, the railway serves as a critical strategic asset. As geopolitical tensions periodically threaten the security of maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz, this terrestrial corridor offers a vital alternative, enhancing the regionâs logistical independence and long-term economic security.
