Tragedy at Washington Paper Plant Claims 11 Lives
A devastating industrial accident at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant in Longview, Washington, has officially concluded as a tragedy. Authorities confirmed on Saturday that search crews recovered the remains of the final nine missing employees, bringing the total death toll to 11. The catastrophe began on Tuesday when a massive 900,000-gallon tank suffered a catastrophic structural failure, releasing a surge of hazardous white liquor throughout the facility during an early morning shift change.
The chemical involved, white liquor, is a potent alkaline mixture of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide used in the paper pulping process. Its release triggered an intensive multi-day rescue operation that sadly resulted in no survivors among those caught in the spill. Nippon Dynawave, a subsidiary of the Japan-based Nippon Paper Group known for its global supply of paper containers, is now facing the aftermath of this industrial disaster as investigations into the tank's failure continue.
