Trump Adjusts Section 232 Tariffs on Key Metal Imports
President Donald Trump has officially signed a proclamation to modify the existing Section 232 national security tariffs concerning steel, aluminum, and copper imports. Under these updated guidelines, tariffs on specific derivative products—such as various agricultural machines and residential HVAC systems—have been reduced from 25% down to 15%. Additionally, mobile industrial machinery like forklifts and bulldozers will now face a 15% tariff when sourced from nations involved in active trade deals with the United States.
To further encourage the use of domestic resources, the order introduces a provision allowing foreign firms to qualify for a lower 10% tariff rate if their capital equipment consists of at least 85% US-processed steel or aluminum. Conversely, the administration has expanded the list of taxed items by adding steel racks and aluminum lithographic plates, both of which will now be hit with a 25% duty. These adjustments are scheduled to take effect on June 8 and will remain active through the end of 2027 as part of a strategic effort to revitalize the American industrial sector.
