Overseas Pakistanis Continue to Bolster National Economy Through Record Remittances
In July, overseas Pakistanis collectively sent home $3.63 billion, marking a solid 4.5 percent rise compared to the previous month. Saudi Arabia emerged as a key driver of this growth, with the diaspora there contributing over $913 million. While Gulf nations remain the backbone of these inflows—hosting nearly half of the global Pakistani workforce—the United Arab Emirates saw a slight downturn, with remittances falling by roughly seven percent to $737.3 million. Despite this minor dip in the UAE, the overall trend underscores the unwavering commitment of the 15 million Pakistanis living abroad to support their families and the national economy.
These remittances have become a vital lifeline for Pakistan, often outperforming the country's total merchandise exports and dwarfing annual foreign direct investment by a significant margin. This consistent influx of foreign currency is instrumental in helping the nation manage its trade deficit and maintain a current account surplus, even as import costs rise. Following a record-breaking fiscal year where inflows reached $41.6 billion, the contributions from major hubs like the UK, the European Union, and the US continue to provide essential financial stability, reinforcing the government’s view that the diaspora is truly the country's most valuable asset.
