Ryanair to Implement Wage Freezes and Fare Hikes Amid Surging Fuel Costs
Ryanair has announced plans to initiate a rigorous cost-cutting strategy and increase ticket prices as the airline grapples with the financial fallout of rising jet fuel costs, heavily influenced by the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran. CEO Michael O’Leary warned that the company’s fuel expenditures are projected to climb by approximately 2 billion euros in the upcoming financial year. To mitigate this impact, the Dublin-based carrier is considering several belt-tightening measures, including temporary salary freezes, adjusted cabin crew staffing ratios, and a broader integration of artificial intelligence to streamline back-office functions.
The airline reported a six percent decline in second-quarter profits, highlighting the vulnerability of the travel sector to geopolitical instability. Although Ryanair has successfully hedged a large portion of its current fuel needs at lower prices, these favorable contracts are set to expire, leaving the company exposed to higher market rates in the years ahead. Consequently, O’Leary cautioned that passengers should prepare for double-digit fare increases across the European aviation industry by 2027. While travel demand remains relatively steady, the combination of energy price volatility and wider macroeconomic uncertainty continues to complicate the airline's outlook for the near future.
