Binance Recovers 90% of Stolen Assets Following Massive Breach
Binance announced on Saturday that it has successfully recouped 90% of the funds lost during a staggering $6.3 billion security breach. The remaining 10% of the stolen assets are comprised of less liquid tokens, which the exchange notes will take additional time to source. To bridge this gap and protect its users, the platform has allocated roughly $6.34 billion from its own corporate reserves, utilizing a portion of its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) to ensure client accounts remain fully covered.
Co-CEO Richard Teng described the incident as a highly sophisticated operation, noting that attackers utilized a compromised laptop and specialized malware to erase digital footprints, which significantly hampered initial investigative efforts. Despite the complexity of the hack, the exchange is moving forward with a new proof-of-reserves snapshot taken on October 31. This initiative aims to reassure users by verifying that major holdingsâsuch as BTC, ETH, and BNBâmaintain a minimum 1:1 backing ratio. Binance confirmed that it remains on schedule to restore full withdrawal services by Sunday, November 1.
