Binance Restores Withdrawals Following Massive $6.3 Billion Security Breach
Binance, the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange, has successfully resumed withdrawals for major assets including Bitcoin, Ether, and several stablecoins after taking immediate steps to reimburse its users. The platform confirmed it has already covered 95% of the staggering $6.3 billion stolen during a sophisticated hack, utilizing its internal corporate treasury and the Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) to replenish the lost tokens. While the exchange continues to source the final 5% of less liquid assets, officials have emphasized that the remaining balance will be fully resolved as market conditions allow.
The massive cyberattack has been officially linked by the FBI to a North Korean state-sponsored unit known as TraderTraitor, an assessment supported by various blockchain analysis firms. Despite the scale of the theft, which occurred in a rapid 20-minute window, Binance has taken full financial responsibility, working closely with federal authorities to track and freeze approximately $3 billion of the stolen funds. As operations return to normal, company leadership expressed deep gratitude toward U.S. law enforcement for their critical assistance in mitigating the impact and preventing a deeper slide in crypto market values.
