Evergrande Founder Xu Jiayin Sentenced to Life Imprisonment Amid Massive Fraud Scandal

The downfall of China’s once-mighty property titan, Evergrande Group, reached a definitive conclusion this Thursday as a Shenzhen court handed down a life sentence to its founder, Xu Jiayin. The ruling, which includes the permanent revocation of his political rights and the confiscation of all personal assets, follows a massive financial scandal involving large-scale fraud, bribery, and the intentional inflation of assets. Alongside the founder's life sentence, the company and its primary real estate subsidiary were slapped with a staggering $2.4 billion fine for their role in a deceptive scheme that spanned from 2016 to 2021, causing significant damage to China’s economic landscape.

Once a symbol of China’s booming property market, the company's trajectory shifted dramatically when authorities tightened regulations on corporate debt and speculation. Following a high-profile default in 2021, the firm’s collapse exposed deep-rooted corruption, with the court noting that Xu had utilized bribery to manipulate financial institutions. The legal fallout extended well beyond the founder; five other senior executives received prison terms of up to 18 years, and a total of 56 individuals were convicted for their roles in the illicit operations. For the 67-year-old Xu, who was once among China’s wealthiest elites, the verdict serves as a stark end to a career defined by rapid expansion and, ultimately, egregious financial misconduct.
