Dubai Sets New Privacy Rules for Enforcement Officer Body Cams
Dubai has introduced a new resolution aimed at regulating how enforcement officers utilize body cameras when documenting violations or executing judicial orders. Under this directive, signed by Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, officers are strictly prohibited from recording in sensitive private areas, including homes, places of worship, and changing rooms. Furthermore, transparency is mandatory, as officers are required to inform individuals whenever they are being recorded to ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.
To safeguard sensitive data, the government has mandated that all footage must be stored using secure, encrypted systems that prevent unauthorized access or tampering. Government entities are now responsible for maintaining strict access controls and ensuring that staff undergo comprehensive training on privacy protection before receiving enforcement powers. Individual officers are similarly bound by these rules, facing strict prohibitions against transferring recordings to personal devices or using captured data for anything other than their official duties. These measures are designed to uphold both public accountability and the fundamental right to privacy across the emirate.
