UK Athletics Fined Following Tragic Death of Paralympic Athlete
UK Athletics has been ordered to pay a £350,000 fine following the tragic death of Emirati Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei, who was killed during a training session in London in 2017. The 36-year-old athlete was preparing for the World Paralympic Athletics Championships at the Newham Leisure Centre when a heavy metal throwing cage collapsed on him, resulting in his immediate death. A subsequent safety investigation revealed that the incident was entirely preventable, as the discus cage was missing critical stabilizing base plates, leaving the structure in a dangerously unstable condition.
Following a guilty plea for corporate manslaughter, the organization was also ordered to cover £44,000 in court costs, while the event's head of sport, Keith Davies, received a community order involving 175 hours of unpaid work for health and safety violations. Prosecutors condemned the organization for its gross negligence, noting that such a preventable loss of life was the result of severe lapses in safety oversight. In response, UK Athletics expressed deep remorse for the failings, emphasizing that they have since overhauled their safety protocols to ensure that such a catastrophic event is never repeated.
