UAE Braces for an Earlier and More Intense Summer
The UAE is currently experiencing an early onset of intense summer heat, with meteorologists confirming that temperatures are rising faster than usual this year. According to Dr. Ahmed Habib of the National Centre of Meteorology, this shift is largely driven by the broader El Niño phenomenon, which is contributing to higher temperatures across the region. While the official start of summer isn't until June 21, the current weather conditions already mirror peak summer heat, with thermometers hitting as high as 48°C. This seasonal transition is being compounded by the Indian monsoon system, which is pushing hot, dry air masses toward the southern parts of the country.
The persistent heat is further sustained by northwesterly desert winds that are currently suppressing moisture and preventing cloud formation, leaving little chance for rainfall in the immediate future. While the UAE typically sees some summer rain—often triggered by moisture from the Oman Sea moving over mountainous terrain—current wind patterns are blocking that cycle. Experts indicate that any significant potential for summer showers will likely remain on hold until the mid-July to mid-August window, when a shift in the Intertropical Convergence Zone may finally allow the necessary moisture to reach eastern regions and the Liwa desert.
