A Milestone Run: Mahmoud Al Khatib’s Tribute to the UAE and His Father
For over 75 consecutive nights, 55-year-old athlete Mahmoud Al Khatib has become a familiar figure along the Abu Dhabi Corniche. What originated as a casual 50-day birthday challenge alongside fellow runner Jonathan Augustin quickly evolved into something far more profound. Having been born in 1971, the same year as the UAE, Al Khatib felt a deep personal connection to the nation and decided to extend the challenge to 55 days to honour the country’s upcoming 55th Union Day. Even after his peers finished the initial goal, he pushed forward, turning his nightly 10km runs into a testament to resilience and national pride.
Beyond the celebration of the UAE, the run has taken on a poignant, personal mission as Al Khatib dedicates every step past the 55th day to his 84-year-old father, who is battling Alzheimer’s disease. Despite overcoming major heart surgery just a year ago, the triathlete continues to defy physical limitations, viewing his journey as a way to support families navigating the struggles of the condition. Whether he reaches his goal of 100 days or stops at day 84 to match his father’s age, Al Khatib remains focused on his next major milestone: representing Team UAE at the World Triathlon Championships in Spain this September. His story serves as a powerful reminder that with patience and purpose, one can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
