Abu Dhabi’s Guide to E-Scooter and Bicycle Rules: Avoid These Fines
As residents in the UAE increasingly rely on e-scooters and bicycles for daily commuting, local authorities have rolled out strict safety regulations to protect both riders and pedestrians. While these modes of transport offer a convenient "last-mile" solution, they come with significant responsibilities. Riders are now required to adhere to specific safety standards, including the mandatory use of helmets and reflective gear, as well as maintaining proper lane discipline. Failing to follow these guidelines, such as parking in unauthorized areas, using mobile phones while riding, or carrying unauthorized passengers, can lead to a standard fine of Dh200 for each violation.
Beyond general safety infractions, there are more severe penalties for riding in prohibited zones. Engaging in restricted activities—such as cycling on jogging tracks, riding on sidewalks without official permission, or entering tunnels and bridges that lack designated lanes—carries a steeper penalty of Dh500. Additionally, riders must ensure their equipment meets technical safety requirements, such as having functioning brakes, proper lights, and bells. By staying informed on these rules and prioritizing road safety, commuters can enjoy the convenience of their mobility devices without risking their finances or their lives.
