How Sharjah’s Ruler Saved a Centuries-Old Armenian Monastery

Sat, Aug 1, 2026(45d ago)UAE

Beyond his well-known efforts to preserve history within the UAE, the Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, has played a pivotal role in safeguarding global cultural landmarks. One of his most notable contributions involved the Haghartsin Monastery, a stunning 10th-century medieval complex tucked away in the Armenian mountains. While the site had successfully endured centuries of invasions and Soviet-era challenges, it had fallen into a state of severe disrepair due to earthquakes and long-term neglect, with crumbling stone walls and deep structural fissures threatening its very survival.

The monastery’s future was secured after a 2005 visit from Sheikh Dr. Sultan, who was so moved by the site that he pledged roughly $1.7 million to oversee its comprehensive restoration. Between 2008 and 2013, the project meticulously repaired the foundations, stonework, and infrastructure while maintaining the integrity of its ancient architecture, including the historic St. Gregory church. Today, the monastery stands as a testament to the strong cultural bond between Armenia and the UAE, serving as both a functional place of worship and a shining example of how international cooperation can rescue precious heritage for future generations.
