Restoring Mobility: Abu Dhabi’s 3D-Printed Prosthetics for Gaza

Traditional prosthetic manufacturing has long been a slow, labor-intensive process, often requiring weeks of manual plaster casting and adjustments. However, the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO) in Abu Dhabi has revolutionized this approach through a partnership with German firm OTB Bauerfeind. By utilizing advanced 3D scanning and printing technology, technicians can now create custom-fitted limbs in just three working days. This digital workflow captures precise measurements of a patient’s residual limb, allowing for rapid production and easy modifications that would previously have required starting from scratch.

This technological leap is the backbone of the "Step of Hope" initiative, a humanitarian effort funded by the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an to provide prosthetic limbs to Palestinians impacted by the war in Gaza. Beyond the impressive speed of production, the program carries profound social significance: the limbs are being crafted by People of Determination in the UAE. As ZHO Secretary-General Abdullah Al Humaidan notes, this empowers these individuals to take an active role as humanitarian producers rather than just beneficiaries. It is a powerful example of how the UAE’s focus on rehabilitation technology is transitioning from local needs to vital, life-changing support for those navigating recovery in conflict zones.
