Folktales Bridge Cultures at New UAE-Poland Art Exhibition
A unique cultural exchange recently debuted at Warsaw's National Library of Poland, featuring a collaborative exhibit titled "Folktales Reimagined." Inaugurated by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, the showcase invited Emirati and Polish artists to step outside their comfort zones by illustrating stories from the other's cultural heritage. By reimagining these traditional narratives, the artists highlighted the universal nature of human emotions, values, and dreams, proving that folklore remains a timeless thread connecting people across continents regardless of language or geography.
The exhibition features fascinating creative interpretations, such as Polish artist Joanna Czaplewskaâs depiction of the Emirati tale of Netifan, and Emirati artist Khalid Mezainaâs reimagining of the Polish legend of the Basilisk. Notably, many of the illustrators chose to dress characters in the traditional attire of their own culture, a deliberate artistic choice that beautifully blended the two traditions. This initiative, organized by the UAE Board on Books for Young People in partnership with its Polish counterpart, continues a successful global concept that has previously bridged the gap between the UAE and nations like Italy, Greece, and South Korea.
