Bangladesh Seeks Clarity on Hasina's Planned New Delhi Address

Tue, Aug 4, 2026(45d ago)World

The Bangladeshi government has officially requested that India clarify its position regarding a scheduled virtual appearance by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from New Delhi. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam emphasized that while Dhaka remains committed to fostering a positive and forward-looking relationship with its neighbor, the involvement of a fugitive in political activities on Indian soil could jeopardize these diplomatic efforts. The event, hosted by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia, is intended to coincide with the anniversary of the uprising that led to Hasina's ousting, and Bangladesh has made it clear that such public engagements are a source of significant concern.

Dhaka continues to push for Hasina's extradition to face numerous legal charges, including a death sentence related to the violent 2024 crackdown that resulted in hundreds of deaths. While the Indian government has not officially responded to the concerns raised by the Bangladeshi administration, officials in Dhaka maintain that they will utilize diplomatic channels to address the issue. Bangladesh insists that India should discourage political rhetoric from individuals seeking refuge within its borders to ensure that the current efforts to rebuild bilateral ties remain unaffected by regional political tensions.
