Saudi Man Penalized for Attempting to Smuggle Zamzam Water
A Saudi Arabian man has been ordered to pay a fine of SAR 3,800 after being caught attempting to transport 380 litres of Zamzam water across the border. Customs officials discovered the stash concealed within the trunk of his vehicle during a routine inspection at the King Fahd Causeway checkpoint in the Eastern Province. The Second Preliminary Customs Committee in Riyadh officially charged the individual with smuggling, noting that the water had not been declared and falls under strict export regulations enforced within the Kingdom.
In addition to the monetary penalty, which matches the estimated value of the confiscated goods, the committee ruled that the entire shipment of water must be forfeited. While public prosecutors had originally pushed for a prison sentence to serve as a deterrent, the committee opted against incarceration. Officials cited the defendant’s clean criminal record as a primary reason for the decision, concluding that the fine and the forfeiture of the water were sufficient disciplinary actions under the Unified Customs Law of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
