Philippines Cracks Down on Online Recruitment Scams Targeting OFWs
To better protect migrant workers from digital exploitation, the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has teamed up with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG). This new partnership ensures that any reports of online recruitment fraud filed by Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) or their families are fast-tracked directly to cybercrime investigators. By streamlining this process, the government aims to move beyond mere documentation and take aggressive legal action against syndicates operating in the digital space.
Beyond reactive measures, the initiative focuses on prevention and education. The DMW is now integrating critical information regarding online scams and human trafficking into its pre-employment orientation seminars to help jobseekers spot red flags. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac has issued a stern warning to potential applicants to verify that agencies are licensed and to never deposit money into personal bank accounts. As authorities increase their focus on digital evidence gathering and cross-agency training, they hope to create a safer environment for Filipinos seeking employment abroad and send a firm warning to those attempting to profit from illegal recruitment.
