Taqa-led Consortium to Spearhead Abu Dhabi’s New 2.6GW Power Project
The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has officially awarded the contract for the Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) project to a consortium headed by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa), in partnership with Aljomaih Energy and Water Company and Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries. This massive 2.6-gigawatt combined-cycle gas turbine plant is set to play a crucial role in Abu Dhabi’s energy landscape. By integrating advanced carbon capture capabilities and high-efficiency H-class gas turbines from Siemens Energy, the facility is designed to bolster grid stability while facilitating the transition toward renewable energy. Commercial operations are scheduled to commence in 2029, with Taqa holding a majority 60 percent stake in the venture.
Aligned with the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, the project represents a strategic balance between maintaining energy security and pursuing aggressive decarbonization. Under a power purchase agreement extending to 2050, EWEC will serve as the sole off-taker for the electricity produced. Beyond its technical contributions, the initiative supports the nation's broader economic goals by creating specialized career opportunities for UAE nationals. As the emirate pushes toward its 2035 and 2050 clean energy milestones, this plant will act as a flexible, reliable backbone that ensures consistent power supply while allowing for the seamless integration of large-scale solar photovoltaic capacity into the national grid.
