DP World Accelerates $800 Million Overhaul of Syria’s Tartous Port
Dubai-based logistics leader DP World is moving quickly to fast-track its $800 million renovation of Syria’s Port of Tartous, a project central to the nation's broader economic recovery. Following a high-level meeting between DP World chairman Essa Kazim and Syrian customs officials, the focus has shifted toward upgrading the facility’s infrastructure and digitizing cargo operations to handle increased traffic. Secured under a 30-year concession agreement signed in mid-2025, this massive investment aims to transform the Mediterranean site into a modern, high-efficiency maritime hub capable of re-establishing Syria’s role within essential global trade corridors.
By expanding terminal capacities and streamlining logistics, the project seeks to bolster Syria’s commercial supply chains while deepening economic ties between the UAE and Syria, which saw non-oil trade jump significantly in 2025. Beyond the immediate port upgrades, DP World is exploring the development of inland freight hubs and specialized logistics zones to further integrate the country into the regional economy. As Syria looks to rebuild its infrastructure, this initiative is seen as a pivotal step in positioning Tartous as a critical transit point connecting the Eastern Mediterranean with growing markets across Asia, the Gulf, and Europe.
