Will Geopolitical Tensions Push Oil Prices to $100 a Barrel?

Thu, Aug 20, 2026(6h ago)Business

Oil prices are climbing toward the $90 threshold as market analysts warn that the current instability in the Middle East is evolving from a temporary shock into a persistent reality. With the expiration of the 60-day ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran and ongoing Houthi attacks on Red Sea infrastructure, the market is bracing for prolonged supply chain disruptions. Compounding these fears is the depletion of U.S. strategic petroleum reserves, which have hit their lowest levels since 1982. This shrinking safety net, paired with rising geopolitical tensions, has experts speculating that a surge past $100 per barrel is becoming an increasingly plausible scenario.

Despite the upward momentum, the oil market remains trapped in a tug-of-war between supply risk and softening global demand. Industry experts like Naeem Aslam of Zaye Capital Markets note that current price hikes are driven primarily by a "geopolitical premium" rather than a genuine surge in consumption. Because the market is hypersensitive to headlines regarding the Strait of Hormuz and diplomatic deadlock, prices are currently volatile rather than climbing in a straight line. Ultimately, whether oil sustains this rally or retreats depends on whether regional supply constraints continue to outweigh concerns about a slowing global economy.
