The Legal Battle Over OpenAI: Musk and Altman Face Off

Fri, May 15, 2026(53d ago)Business

As the high-stakes trial between Elon Musk and OpenAI draws to a close, closing arguments have highlighted a bitter clash over the company's evolution from a safety-focused nonprofit to a massive commercial enterprise. Musk’s legal team launched a fierce attack on CEO Sam Altman’s integrity, characterizing him as a dishonest operator who prioritized profit over the organization’s foundational mission to benefit humanity. Arguing that Musk was manipulated into providing $38 million in seed funding, his lawyers are seeking $150 billion in damages and the removal of top leadership, alleging that the transition to a for-profit model—backed by billions from Microsoft—betrayed the core promises made to the public.

In response, OpenAI’s defense counsel dismissed the lawsuit as a series of baseless accusations, arguing that Musk was well aware of the company’s financial realities years ago. They accused the billionaire of "selective amnesia," particularly regarding his own history of pushing for corporate control and his failure to act within the statute of limitations. Defense lawyers further countered that Musk’s criticisms are hypocritical, given his own profit-driven ventures in the AI space. With the jury now set to deliberate, the outcome of this case could force significant restructuring of one of the world's most influential AI companies as it prepares for a potential trillion-dollar valuation.
