Adnoc Drilling’s First AI-Powered Rig Hits the Field Early
Adnoc Drilling has officially launched the AD-300, a groundbreaking, fully automated walking island rig that arrived nearly three months ahead of schedule. Towering at 50 meters and weighing 2,000 tonnes, this sophisticated piece of machinery is designed for maximum efficiency, featuring hybrid power options and the ability to connect directly to the electrical grid to lower operational emissions. Its unique "walking" design allows it to navigate between well locations without needing to be dismantled, while integrated AI and automated pipe-handling systems significantly improve safety by reducing the need for human intervention in high-risk zones.
As the first of six next-generation rigs commissioned under a $1.54 billion contract, the AD-300 represents a major upgrade in how offshore energy development is handled. Deployed on one of Adnoc’s artificial islands, the rig is expected to drive faster, more consistent performance, bolstering the company's revenue outlook through 2027. Adnoc Drilling CEO Abdulla Ateya Al Messabi highlighted that the early deployment of this technology is a testament to the company's commitment to large-scale innovation, safety, and production growth, reinforcing the UAE’s standing as a global leader in advanced energy solutions.
