India and US Edge Closer to Trade Agreement
Recent trade negotiations between India and the United States have been described as a positive move forward, though both nations have stopped short of declaring a final agreement. Following a productive two-day visit from US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal expressed optimism, characterizing the discussions as constructive and future-oriented. While the two countries had previously established a preliminary framework involving reciprocal tariff reductions, progress has been tempered by legal complexities and ongoing investigations into trade practices.
Despite these hurdles, officials from both sides remain hopeful that an interim deal is within reach. Minister Goyal has publicly suggested that the vast majority of the agreement is essentially complete, with US Ambassador Sergio Gor echoing this sentiment by noting that negotiators are currently focused on ironing out the final one percent of the terms. To move past the remaining roadblocks, India is seeking to maintain its regional competitiveness and has proposed a "revisit clause," which would allow both governments to adjust the deal's conditions after an agreed-upon period.
