Emaar Properties Shifts to Sole Leadership for Damascus’ Eighth Gate Project
Dubai-based developer Emaar Properties has announced plans to dissolve its joint venture for the Eighth Gate project in Damascus, Syria, marking a transition to acting as the sole operator of the ambitious development. According to Emaar founder Mohamed Alabbar, this strategic shift is rooted in the firm's growing confidence in Syria’s economic landscape. By taking full control, the company aims to ensure the development meets the same high-tier standards and design principles that have defined its iconic projects in Dubai, such as Downtown Dubai and Emaar Beachfront.
The Eighth Gate, a sprawling $500 million master-planned community located in Yafour, serves as a bridge between Syria’s ancient heritage and its future aspirations. Originally conceived in 2005, the project draws its name from the city’s historic seven gates, aiming to symbolize a modern era of growth and commerce. This move comes at a time when the UAE is strengthening its ties with Syria, highlighted by recent diplomatic initiatives such as the restoration of the historic Umayyad Mosque. With Emaar now at the helm, the company intends to steer the 300,000-square-meter development toward completion, reflecting a renewed commitment to the country's long-term urban resurgence.
