Meta Navigates Massive Restructuring as Zuckerberg Focuses on AI Future

Thu, May 21, 2026(91d ago)Business

Meta has officially begun a significant round of layoffs, parting ways with approximately 8,000 employees—roughly 10 percent of its total global workforce. The process, which commenced early Wednesday, is part of a broader strategy orchestrated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to aggressively pivot the company’s resources toward artificial intelligence. In addition to these personnel cuts, the company has scrapped plans to fill 6,000 vacant positions and is reassigning 7,000 staff members to roles specifically focused on AI-driven workflows.

In a candid memo to his staff, Zuckerberg acknowledged the gravity of the situation, expressing personal remorse over the loss of talented team members while emphasizing the necessity of this transition. He provided some stability for the remaining workforce by stating that no further company-wide layoffs are anticipated for the year. Looking ahead, Zuckerberg remains focused on Meta’s mission to develop "personal superintelligence," a goal backed by a massive surge in infrastructure spending that sees capital expenditures climbing significantly higher than in previous years.
