Singapore Airlines Pushes for Stricter Governance in Potential Air India Funding

Wed, Sep 9, 2026(2h ago)Business

Singapore Airlines is reportedly weighing its options regarding a potential new capital injection into Air India, with sources indicating the carrier plans to demand tighter management oversight and improved governance rights before committing further funds. While Air India is currently seeking roughly $1.5 billion in fresh equity to support its operations, Singapore Airlines—which holds a 25.1% stake in the airline—wants to ensure that any additional investment comes with more robust influence over board decisions and clear targets to curb the carrier’s persistent financial losses.

This cautious approach stems from Singapore Airlines' desire to shield itself from the risks associated with Air India’s lengthy turnaround, which Tata Sons has signaled could take up to a decade. Although Singapore Airlines currently has limited formal sway over Air India's day-to-day operations, it is looking to leverage its position to demand greater accountability. Despite pressure from some quarters regarding the use of state-backed resources, Singapore Airlines has clarified that any future funding would come from its own internal cash reserves, maintaining that its long-term strategy remains focused on capturing growth in the expanding Indian aviation market while prioritizing responsible financial management.
