Ferrari’s High-Voltage Gamble: The All-Electric 'Luce' Arrives

Tue, May 26, 2026(45d ago)Business

Ferrari has officially entered the electric vehicle era with the debut of the "Luce," an ambitious luxury model that marks a significant pivot for the legendary Italian automaker. Named after the Italian word for "Light," this five-seater is a bold departure for a brand synonymous with combustion-engine performance. Boasting a 122 kWh battery, the car delivers impressive specs, including a top speed of over 310 kph and a 0-100 kph sprint in just 2.5 seconds. Designed in collaboration with Jony Ive and Marc Newson, the vehicle features a unique "glass house" aesthetic and represents a rare four-door design for the Maranello manufacturer.

Despite the technical prowess of the Luce, the market response has been cautious, with Ferrari shares taking a sharp hit on the Milan stock exchange following the unveiling. Investors appear skeptical about the company's shift toward electrification, especially given the cooling demand for EVs globally and the model's hefty price tag, estimated to exceed 700,000 euros. While analysts remain divided on whether this ultra-premium strategy will move the needle on long-term earnings, Ferrari management remains optimistic that the car will attract a fresh wave of buyers. With deliveries expected to begin later this year, the success of the Luce will be a critical test of whether the iconic "prancing horse" can maintain its exclusivity and profit margins in a battery-powered future.
