China and Pakistan Revive Strategic Economic Ties

Tue, May 26, 2026(1h ago)Business

Following a high-level visit by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Beijing, China and Pakistan have announced a renewed commitment to accelerating the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The two nations aim to transform the port of Gwadar into a vital regional connectivity hub, signaling a fresh phase in their strategic partnership. As part of this "high-quality" development plan, the countries are prioritizing infrastructure upgrades, including the critical Karakoram Highway and the Khunjerab Pass. Notably, both nations have signaled an openness to third-party involvement in these projects, provided they adhere to mutually agreed-upon terms.

To safeguard this ambitious roadmap, Pakistan has pledged to implement stringent security measures to protect Chinese workers and assets, addressing a longstanding concern for Beijing following sporadic militant activity. Beyond economics, the leaders discussed a shared vision for regional stability, emphasizing support for Middle East peace initiatives and a commitment to the "one-China" principle. Furthermore, both countries expressed a unified stance on Afghanistan, pledging to prevent militant groups from using their borders as a base for cross-regional aggression, thereby underscoring the depth of their diplomatic coordination.
