Strict Visa Policies Are Deterring Nearly Half of Middle East Travellers
According to the latest Global Passenger Survey by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 43% of travellers across the Middle East are choosing not to visit certain destinations due to burdensome visa and immigration requirements. While complex entry processes remain the primary barrier, Middle Eastern travellers are uniquely sensitive to costs compared to their global counterparts. This trend mirrors a worrying worldwide rise in passengers being discouraged by travel restrictions, which has climbed from 33% to 43% over the past year.
Despite these hurdles, the region shows an unparalleled enthusiasm for adopting new technology to simplify the travel experience. Middle Eastern passengers are the most proactive users of AI for trip planning and lead the world in their willingness to adopt digital passports and share biometric data for smoother airport transit. However, there is currently a mismatch between this digital appetite and actual availability, as the regional adoption of biometric processes has recently declined. Even so, overall satisfaction with air travel in the Middle East remains exceptionally high at 90%, reflecting a resilient and tech-savvy traveller base eager for more streamlined digital solutions.
