UAE Public Holidays: Could You See More Long Weekends Ahead?
A significant change in UAE labor regulations, introduced via Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, now offers the potential for more extended weekends across the country. Effective since January 1, 2025, this policy empowers the Cabinet to reschedule specific public holidays—such as the Gregorian New Year, Hijri New Year, Prophet’s Birthday, Arafat Day, and UAE National Day—to the beginning or end of the workweek if they fall on a standard weekday. This strategic shift aims to provide residents with more substantial breaks, though it is important to note that these changes are not automatic; they require a formal government announcement for each specific instance.
It is vital for both employers and employees to understand that not all holidays are subject to this rule. Most notably, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha remain fixed to their traditional dates due to their reliance on specific Islamic religious observances. Furthermore, the rule cannot be applied if a holiday coincides with an existing weekend or overlaps with another public holiday. Because these adjustments are at the discretion of the Cabinet, residents are advised to wait for official annual holiday circulars before finalizing travel plans, and businesses should verify these updates with their HR departments to ensure they remain compliant with the updated federal guidelines.
