Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Evolution: Frank Gehry’s Dar al Funoon to Open by 2030
Abu Dhabi is set to cement its status as a global cultural powerhouse with the announcement of Dar al Funoon, a sprawling performing arts hub designed by the legendary architect Frank Gehry. Scheduled to open in 2030 near the prestigious Saadiyat Cultural District, the project was recently reviewed by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. This ambitious landmark is designed to complement existing institutions like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim, offering a state-of-the-art home for opera, ballet, and theatre that will accommodate over 6,000 guests across its various venues, including a 2,000-seat performance hall and a unique open-air amphitheater.
Beyond its striking transparent architecture—a design choice intended to mirror the city’s commitment to creativity and international dialogue—Dar al Funoon aims to be a cornerstone for artistic development. By hosting world-class touring productions alongside long-term residencies and educational workshops, the venue will serve as a vital incubator for both regional and Emirati talent. Through this investment, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi continues its mission to weave the arts into the fabric of everyday life, ensuring that the emirate remains a dynamic intersection for global culture and local inspiration.
