Indian Expats Face Uncertainty as Consular Services Transition Stalls
Many Indian expatriates living in the UAE are currently grappling with significant stress as a transition between service providers has led to unexpected disruptions in essential consular operations. The shift from the long-standing service provider, BLS, to Alhind Tours & Travels—following a competitive tender process—has left many families in a precarious position. Parents are particularly concerned, with some reporting that vital college admissions for their children are at risk due to the sudden inability to obtain mandatory documents like NRI certificates during this administrative handover.
The situation has caused a ripple effect, with residents scrambling to secure travel plans or meet urgent visa requirements. Many individuals have been forced to go to great lengths, such as traveling to distant emirates, just to renew passports before deadlines expired. Recognizing the growing frustration, the Indian mission in the UAE recently announced that limited consular services, including passport and visa processing, would resume on a walk-in basis starting July 2. While this move aims to bridge the gap, the community remains anxious as they navigate the shift and attempt to resolve their pending documentation needs.
