UAE Extends Social Security Benefits to Entrepreneurs and Freelancers
The General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) has officially opened registration for an expanded social insurance program tailored specifically for self-employed Emiratis and entrepreneurs. This initiative, backed by the federal decree-law on pension and social security, aims to bridge the protection gap for the nation's growing independent workforce. By bringing freelancers and business owners under this umbrella, the UAE is fostering a more resilient labor market, aligning with the "We the UAE 2031" vision to ensure long-term socioeconomic stability and inclusive growth for all citizens.
Participants in this optional scheme can enjoy a variety of protective measures, including retirement pensions, end-of-service gratuities, and coverage for disability or death. The system is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing individuals to choose and adjust their contribution tiers based on their current earnings. Emirati nationals between the ages of 18 and 55 with valid professional or commercial licenses can apply through the "Ma’ashi" digital platform. By enabling the transfer of entitlements and the merging of service periods, the GPSSA is successfully modernizing its framework to support career mobility, whether citizens choose to work in the government, private, or freelance sectors.
