Indian Embassy Mourns Indian Sailor Killed in Iranian Tanker Attack
The Indian embassy in the UAE has officially expressed its deepest condolences following the death of an Indian crew member during an Iranian attack on two tankers, the Al Bahiyah and the Mombasa B. Beyond this tragic loss, the assault left eight other seafarers injuredâsix Indians and two Ukrainiansâwith four individuals reportedly in serious condition. The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that while the fires ignited by the strikes have since been contained, the incident marks a dangerous escalation in the region. The Indian mission is currently coordinating with local authorities to ensure the families of the victims receive necessary support and that the injured sailors are provided with the best possible care.
This incident is part of a volatile climate in the Gulf, fueled by ongoing hostilities between the US and Iran that have persisted despite hopes for a de-escalation. For many Indian mariners who form the backbone of global merchant shipping, the region has become a perilous workplace. Even with the repatriation of thousands of sailors since the conflict began in February, those remaining continue to face significant risks. Survivors of similar attacks, such as Sitaram Tandel, describe the psychological toll of these encounters, noting that while some manage to return home, the fear of future violence and the uncertainty regarding their livelihoods continue to plague the seafaring community.
