A group of young Emiratis recently completed the inaugural "Al Nokhadha" programme in Sharjah’s Al Hamriyah, a four-day intensive training course designed to bridge the gap between historical fishing practices and modern maritime safety. Organized by the Al Hamriyah Fishermen Cooperative Society, the initiative allowed participants to learn directly from veteran fishermen, covering essential skills such as boat preparation, navigation, and reading weather patterns. Beyond the technical aspects of the trade, students gained insight into the proper handling, preservation, and sale of their catch, ensuring that they understand the importance of quality and sustainability in the fishing industry.

The success of the first edition, which ran from July 6 to July 9, has sparked significant enthusiasm for preserving the UAE's maritime legacy. By combining classroom theory with hands-on training, the programme introduced participants to ancestral techniques like "Al Daghwa," alongside modern emergency response protocols. Local leaders, including Jamal Majid Al Shamsi and Harib Sultan bin Harib Al Muhairi, emphasized that the goal is to cultivate a new, capable generation of fishermen who can carry these traditions forward. Following this positive reception, the cooperative plans to host future sessions, ensuring the continuity of these vital skills and promoting sustainable fishing practices for years to come.
