19-Year-Old Fatima Al Awadhi Becomes First Emirati to Conquer Lenin Peak

Wed, Jul 29, 2026(1h ago)UAE

Nineteen-year-old Emirati mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi has etched her name in history by becoming the first person from the UAE to summit the grueling 7,134-metre Lenin Peak in Kyrgyzstan’s Pamir Mountains. This remarkable feat, accomplished on July 18, 2026, makes her the youngest Arab to ever reach such a daunting altitude. Navigating treacherous glaciated terrain and extreme weather without the use of supplementary oxygen, Fatima spent three weeks pushing her physical and mental limits. Reaching the top allowed her to proudly plant the UAE flag at the summit for the first time, serving as a powerful testament to her resilience and the growing prominence of Emirati athletes on the global stage.

Beyond the physical challenge, this climb marks a significant milestone in Fatima’s quest to complete the prestigious Seven Summits and the Explorer’s Grand Slam before her 20th birthday. A recipient of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship, Fatima balances her elite mountaineering career with the demands of university studies, embodying a unique blend of academic and athletic excellence. She dedicated this achievement to the nation's leadership, particularly President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, citing their unwavering support as the catalyst for her success. By carrying a message of ambition and hope to one of the world's highest peaks, she aims to inspire a new generation of youth to pursue their own ambitious dreams with perseverance and courage.
