UAE Researcher Launches AI Tool to Combat the Deepfake Crisis
In response to the alarming rise of AI-generated misinformation, Emirati cybersecurity researcher Bashayer Al Salami has introduced "Deepy," an innovative platform designed to verify the authenticity of digital media. Developed as part of her master’s research at Zayed University, the tool addresses the growing danger of hyper-realistic deepfakes that often bypass human detection. By scrutinizing technical indicators such as pixel patterns, lighting inconsistencies, and subtle movement distortions, the platform provides users with a reliable credibility assessment for photos, videos, and audio clips.
The system leverages advanced deep learning models trained on vast datasets of both authentic and fabricated content, allowing it to identify digital fingerprints left by AI generators. While the current iteration of the technology is tailored for government agencies, journalists, and security firms, Al Salami is actively working on a consumer-facing version to empower the general public. By curbing the spread of manipulated media, especially during times of political tension, Deepy aims to foster a more secure digital landscape and promote greater awareness regarding the dangers of online deception.
