Pakistan to Transition Fully to E-Passports for Enhanced Security
Pakistan is set to undergo a significant digital transformation by phasing out traditional machine-readable passports in favor of modern e-passports. Announced by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, this initiative aims to bolster national security and streamline the travel experience for citizens. E-passports feature an integrated electronic chip that securely stores the holderâs biometric data, enabling seamless passage through automated e-gates at borders. While a definitive timeline for the total withdrawal of older documents has yet to be established, the government is committed to this modernized infrastructure.
Alongside the shift to electronic documents, authorities are overhauling the passport application process to improve public convenience. Director General of Passports and Immigration Muhammad Ali Randhawa confirmed that a new home delivery service is now operational, allowing citizens both within Pakistan and abroad to receive their documents directly without visiting local offices. Furthermore, the government is moving toward a fully cashless payment model starting July 1, effectively eliminating manual cash transactions at banks to ensure a more transparent and efficient system for all applicants.
