Hamas Ends Long-Term Rule in Gaza

Mon, Jul 6, 2026(3h ago)World

In a major political shift, Hamas has officially announced the dissolution of the administrative committee that has managed the Gaza Strip since 2007. By stepping down from its day-to-day governance duties, the organization aims to pave the way for the Cairo-based National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) to assume control. Hamas officials framed this move as a strategic effort to remove obstacles to peace and address the ongoing humanitarian crisis, expressing their willingness to transition power to this new technocratic body to facilitate civilian administration.

Despite this development, analysts and diplomats remain skeptical, noting that the gesture is largely symbolic as long as the core issue of disarmament remains unaddressed. The NCAG has indicated it is prepared to govern, but it insists on having a singular authority and a unified security force, a condition that clashes with Hamas’s continued military presence. As negotiations regarding the second phase of the ceasefire stall, both Israel and Hamas continue to trade blame over the lack of progress, leaving the future of Gaza’s governance in a state of deep uncertainty.
