ICC Denounces US Sanctions as a Direct Assault on Judicial Independence

Thu, Aug 20, 2026(5h ago)World

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued a sharp rebuke against the United States following Washington's decision to impose sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane and trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye. Describing the move as a “flagrant attack” on its independence, the court argued that targeting judicial officials undermines the rule of law and obstructs the pursuit of international justice. The US, which is not a member of the Rome Statute, has long criticized the body as being politically motivated, particularly regarding investigations into its allies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the sanctions, asserting that the court has overstepped its mandate by attempting to exercise jurisdiction over individuals from nations that have not consented to its authority.

The sanctions have triggered a wave of global backlash, with the European Union, the United Nations, and Germany voicing strong opposition. European leaders emphasized that the ICC must operate free from external coercion, while Japan—the court's primary financial contributor and a key US ally—expressed deep regret over the measures. Despite the controversy, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the US action, labeling the ICC a "kangaroo court." As the diplomatic standoff intensifies, human rights organizations have begun legal challenges against these sanctions, warning that such political maneuvering effectively shields perpetrators of war crimes and denies victims their right to justice.
