5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia's Flores Region
The Flores region of Indonesia was rattled by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake on Thursday, according to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremor originated at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers. This latest seismic event adds to a distressing week for the nation, as it marks the third significant earthquake to strike Indonesian territory in just a few days.
The region remains on high alert following a string of recent disasters, including a powerful 7.7 magnitude quake on August 15 that resulted in 53 fatalities, over 100 injuries, and widespread displacement. This was followed by a 6.1 magnitude tremor near Sumatra earlier this week. For residents of Flores, these tremors are particularly unsettling, as they evoke painful memories of a devastating 1992 earthquake and the subsequent tsunami that claimed the lives of nearly 2,500 people.
